What is a drone?

You may have heard about it before from a friend, or from the news and in this article, we will discuss what ‘drone’ really means.

What exactly is a Drone?

When hear the word ‘drone’ before, we automatically associate it with the military or any spy gadget maybe. A scary but cool-looking unmanned aerial vehicle that can fly thousands of miles ready to drop bombs or equipped with cameras for surveillance (like what was used on the 2015 movie ‘Eye in the Sky’).

Times have changed, as now, we use the term to refer to almost any radio controlled aircraft that can fly and do any “work”, and 2 examples are camera drones and racing drones.

Camera Drones are used to retrieve aerial videos and photos like the DJI Phantoms and Yuneec Typhoons. ‘Racing drones’ on the other hand are built to race and the community is actually growing too as they currently have Racing Leagues.

Do I need a Drone?

There are a lot of uses for a one and building or buying one would be your preference. Industries and companies are now finding a multitude of things a drone can do which can be beneficial.

A few examples of of a drone’s use could be: law enforcement, aerial cinematography, search and rescue, delivery and recreation(racing) to name a few and the possibilities are endless when talking about then usage of a drone. The question when talking about a drone is not what you “can” you do it but, what you “want” the drone to do.

Thinking of getting your hands dirty on drones but don’t want to spend big money yet? You can start small. A huge range of small and cheap RC quad-copters and airplanes are available that should get you started with the hobby and here’s a few tips before buying your first drone.

Cheap drones are really rough to fly unlike drones priced $500 and up, but they give you a really good feel of flying. You’ll then realize that drones are really fun to operate than you ever thought it would be.

A few weeks into flying, you might be on your way to the drone store to buy another model or build your own, as again, the possibilities of drone usage are endless.
